Lesson Summary
In the fifth lesson, we:
Looked at the paragraph descriptions of ING you'd written, and discussed issues which arose from mistakes found in them.
Checked the Passive-to-Active sentences you did for self-study.
Discussed Appropriacy and Register in Endings.
Some points to remember that came out of the lesson:
Your written English is already very good, with few mistakes (except where you copied it from the internet!) - what we're trying to do in this course is look at the nuances of meaning implied by various structures and sentence constructions.
'Foregrounding' can significantly alter the tone of your correspondence: there is (subconsciously) significance attached to the first words to appear in a sentence in the mind of the reader, due to their prominence. You can use this to your advantage in creating effect.
There may be times when you want to emphasise your distance (as an agent or operator) from the action in the sentence by using the Passive, just as there are times when using a subject pronoun in an Active sentence will assist you in personalising your message and engaging with your correspondent.

Self-study Practice
The only homework for this week is to take part in one of the discussions attached to each page in this wiki: at least one message per participant, please. Feel free to choose any discussion, regardless of whether someone has already contributed or not. This is to be completed by Tuesday, May 5.
